This activity pack features up to 23 hours of hands-on, drop-in learning experiences for middle school classrooms using the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education Base Set and the Renewable Energy Add-On Set with the MINDSTORMS Energy Parts Pack. The activities in this pack meet expectations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with a focus on power generation from renewable sources. Building instructions are provided to create a hand generator, a solar station, and a wind turbine. The pack includes nine detailed lesson plans and four open-ended extension activities. These activities provide students with opportunities to build, program, operate, innovate, observe, and think critically about a working power station with connections to real-world use of renewable energy in their own community and around the world. All 4C-based activities include building guides, NXT sample programs, programming guides, and reproducible worksheets. Several additional activities include video tours of sample NXT programs to walk users through key concepts in programming. The extension activities included in the pack provide detailed overviews as well as building and programming support. In addition to a printable teacher’s guide, the CD features lesson-planning routes, a curriculum grid for planning, the Renewable Energy Getting Started with the LEGO® Energy Meter Guide, renewable energy background content, a glossary, and elements inventories for the sets used to create the models.
